Award-winning photos
I am extremely happy, in fact I would say ecstatic to win not one but two silvers awards in the guild of photographers image of the month competition!! I thought I would take this opportunity to share photos with you and give you a little bit of background as to when and where the photos were taken, but first a little bit about the Guild of photographers.
The Guild of Photographers is a highly regarded national photographic body and its members are dedicated to enhancing their skills in the art, craft and profession of photography.
They are committed to achieving the highest standards of professionalism for the benefit of their customers. They pledge themselves to delivering the highest standards of customer service and to a journey of continuing professional development.
The photos were taken as a series of behind-the-scenes shots for a film Written & Directed by Tom Young, the film was entitled Miner is a short film charting the fictional life of a coal miner leading up to, during and after the 1984 Miners’ Strike. A Red Fox Films production in association with Seven / Five Productions.
The first shot a portrait of a minor was shot in an alley no wider than the meter and A half, are used A photo indra500 with a Beauty dish to light my subject from the camera left, the challenges with this photo to overcome was the miners hat, put the light too high and you have a nasty shadow get the like just right and you get a beautiful catchlight in his eye.
The second photo, a group of miners by the coal pit was taken with a backdrop of a miners wheel at the Coalville mining Museum. The structure itself is very interesting it has some lovely leading lines, that would draw your attention to the group of miners at the bottom. With this in mind I posed miners specifically at the bottom mimicking the triangle that was above them. the photo was a two light set up, my main light directly in front of the miners was the indra500 with a Beauty dish, and the sidelight coming from camera left what is the speedlight to get some rim-light.
Needless to say It was a pleasure to work with the cast and crew, and I’m very happy with the other photos
